Topics for March
  • March 7, 14, 21: “Frogs Without Legs Can’t Hear” — We started a five week preaching/ teaching series in February, lifting up the tenets for Household Ministry and how it is a gift for all ages. These are the final three sessions of the series. Deaconess Kristen Baltrum leads this class.
  • March 28: “The Atonement; Why did Jesus have to die?” — The first session of this class, held on February 14, looked at the three historical explanations for the atonement: substitutionary atonement, moral influence and christus victor. The class was encouraged to see how these doctrines appear in our lessons and in liturgy. We will conclude it on this Sunday looking at some new beliefs surrounding this basic doctrine of our faith.

Sunday School for Preschool-Fifth Grade

Learn by Heart

I wrote briefly last month about this important program that our preschool-fifth grade classes participate in. I want to talk a little more about the importance of this program in partnership with the home. As we all know, the primary place of faith formation is the home. We as a community help to support this growth year after year and continue to nurture it here on Sunday mornings. I cannot tell you how amazed I am to see these young children memorize their Bible verses year after year, building on what they have learned the year before. Thank you to all of you who are working with your children at home to bind these words to their heart! The Learn by Heart listeners are here every other week to hear the verses that the children have memorized. If you are in need of a memorization booklet or additional materials please do not hesitate to contact me (Dawn Reed).

Here are a few different ways families can integrate this memorization program at home:

  • Keep the booklet on your dashboard in the car and before you take off in the morning, read the verse to your child. Help them recite it until they reach their first destination – they will have it by the third day, if not before!
  • Keep the booklet next to their bed and incorporate their verse into their evening prayers.
  • Incorporate it into your family prayers at any meal you share together.
  • Younger children love to draw – help them learn their verse by asking them to draw a picture about it.
  • Older children can learn their verse by looking it up each day in their Bible. This helps them to become more familiar with their Bible as well as learning their verse.

Encountering Christ on the Mountaintops

The program that Sky Ranch brings to our congregation is for children entering first through fifth grades. Be a part of this wonderful summer program to help children grow in their learning of Jesus! Registration forms will be available the first part of April. Forms will be mailed home as well as available in the front office.

The theme for this year’s program is Faith Developed. What does it mean to be a child of God? What impact does that have in your life? How do you talk about your relationship with God? Faith is like a Polaroid picture. What starts out as a cloudy shadow starts to come into focus. Outlines are filled with colors and details. The image slowly becomes recognizable. So also with faith. Early in life we hear the stories of Jesus and we are given an outline of our life with God. Over time, textures start to appear as we live out the commandments—loving God and loving neighbor. What comes into focus is the image of God and a life lived as a follower of Christ.

“For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.” Galatians 3:25
